数学系创建于1973年，是湖北师范学院历史最悠久、师资力量最为雄厚的系之一。现设有数学与应用数学、信息与计算科学和统计学三个本科专业及会计一个专科专业。设有6个教研室和1个应用数学研究所。 应用数学学科在2001年、2006年两度被评为湖北省级重点学科；数学与应用数学专业2006年被评定省级品牌专业; 概率论被评为省级精品课程。现有 在校生1039名，专职教师51名，其中教授9名，副教授22名， 讲师10人，助教10人，其中博士8名，硕士20人。享受国务院特殊津贴专家2人、享受省政府特殊津贴专家1人，外聘教师11人。是一支职称、学历、年龄结构合理的教学科研队伍。近 ５年来，在《中国科学》、《科学通报》、《数学学报》、《数学年刊》、《系统科学与数学》、《nonline .analysis》、《ieee trans.》等国内外权威刊物发表学术论文260余篇，承担国家自然科学基金项目、省教育厅重大、重点项目20余项。系资料室藏书丰富，资料齐全，现有中外专业图书期刊2万余册。数学系为湖北省以及北京、上海、广东、浙江等地输送了大批优秀师资，毕业生的素质和能力受到社会广泛好评，其中大部分已成为重点中学、教育管理部门的骨干。每年应届毕业生一次性就业率就达95%以上。数学系从1986年起接受研究生培养任务，2006年获应用数学专业硕士学位授予权。
