频率高于10吉赫的无线电波段包括微波高频端、毫米波段和亚毫米波段，上与光波的远红外相连，是无线电频谱的最高端，频率资源丰富，大部分正待开拓。频率高于10吉赫的无线电波的传播机制主要是视距电波传播。这个频段的电波与大气的相互作用主要有以下三个方面：①大气折射、大气层结、湍动不均匀性和地面的反射、散射引起的多径衰落和去极化；②大气吸收，主要是水分子和氧分子的吸收；③水汽凝结物（雨、云、雾、雪和冰晶等）及大气中的其他悬浮粒子（烟雾、尘埃、沙暴等）引起的衰减和去极化，其中雨的影响最大(见雨衰减和去极化)。频率高于10吉赫的无线电波具有传输频带宽、天线波束窄、目标分辨率高、射频设备体积小、能穿透雨、云层、浓雾、浓烟的全天候特性,对于大容量数字通信、雷达和遥感等有重要的应用价值。毫米波段中大气衰减较小的几个较高的所谓"窗口"频段已受到人们的重视。利用这一频段某些大气吸收谱线频率可进行保密通信或低截获雷达侦察。频率高于10吉赫的电波传播研究将为这一频段的无线电系统设计合理选择频率、确定大气的有效传输带宽、预测传播中断概率、提高通信系统性能、提高雷达和遥感的目标分辨率等提供可靠的传播依据。
