测量飞机到地面垂直距离用的机载无线电设备，是重要的飞行器仪表之一。它由发射、接收装置和显示器组成。飞机向地面发射无线电波，经地面反射后被飞机接收机接收。无线电波经历两倍飞行高度H的行程所用的时间等于两倍飞行高度被电波传播速度所除的商值。电波传播的速度为恒值，只要测出这段时间便可求出飞行高度。无线电高度表按工作方式分为调频式和脉冲式两种。①调频式无线电高度表：从飞机上向地面发射三角波调制的连续调频波，经地面反射后被接收机接收。把接收到的调频波和从发射机耦合过来的发射波进行混频。输出的差频与飞行高度有关。用频率计数器测出差频，通过换算即得到离地高度。这种高度表以连续波方式工作，必须采用 2个天线分别作为发射天线和接收天线。②脉冲式无线电高度表：它的工作方式与脉冲雷达测量距离的工作方式完全相同。新型脉冲式无线电高度表发射的脉冲宽度可自动调整，无论在低高度或高高度均可作精确测量（见无线电导航、高度测量）。
