In eukaryotic cells,nonsense-mediated mRNA decay(NMD) is an evolutionarily well-conserved and effective mRNA surveillance mechanism that can selectively degrade mRNAs with premature translation termination codons(PTC) and protect cells from the potentially deleterious effects of truncated proteins.
