塔里木盆地在新疆南部，位于天山和昆仑山，阿尔金山之间，东西长1400千米，南北宽约550千米，面积56万平方千米，为我国最大的内陆盆地。塔克拉玛干沙漠位于塔里木盆地中心，大沙漠东西绵延1000千米，南北宽约400千米，面积相当于9个多台湾省的大小，达33.76万平千米，占全国沙漠面积的47.3%，是我国最大的沙漠，也是世界七大沙漠之一，是仅次于西亚鲁卜哈里沙漠的世界第二大流动沙漠。
