东瓜和尚,遗其名,姓孙,杭州人。嗜食东瓜,故名。出家华严庵。为人缄默,竟日游行街市,寒暑无间。经十余年,人莫测之。与邻庵僧慧照友。将寂之前月,告照曰,新正六日,吾行矣,汝合来送我。届期,和尚赴法慧庵斋返,见照先在。曰,汝何来。照笑曰,汝与我约,特来相送耳。和尚曰,微子言,几忘却了。遂盥沐新衣,礼佛竟,谓照曰,既行,不可无偈,为我书之。偈云,终日走街坊,心中念佛忙。世人都不识,别有一天堂。怡然而终。(染香集)评曰,时至而忘归期,前有道证,至此再见,何其生死自如乎。而究其所以致此者,无他,心佛相应故也。今人念佛之功,日仅片时,且不能一其心于安养,而亦欲冀临终之瑞应,难矣哉。
