应用协同学理论研究地理系统中产生自组织的有序结构和功能行为的理论。其基本理论和方法是由德国物理学家哈肯（h.haken）于20世纪70年代初期创立的协同论（或协同学）的原则引伸而来。协同学研究对象是由许多子系统（相同种类或不同种类）的联合作用，导致宏观尺度的结构和功能发生突变的一种自组织过程；并强调由许多不同学科合作来发现支配自组织系统的一般原理。协同学广泛适用于非平衡开放系统的研究。地理系统是远离平衡态的开放系统，包容自然与人文众多的子系统。在外界参量（如太阳辐射、地球内力等）参与下，各子系统通过非线性作用机制达到相互协同；通过能量转化、物质循环和信息传递，既相互协作，又相互干涉，导致系统结构产生质变行为，从而在宏观尺度上从混沌转变为空间、时间和功能上的有序。在学科逻辑体系上又是不同层次的众多分科有机集合的协调研究。故地理协同论有助于深入揭示地理规律。
