指一个传统的教育流派，也称新古典主义教育。它产生于20世纪30年代的美国，流行于50年代的英、法等国，之后逐渐衰落。最主要的代表有美国教育家赫钦斯、法国的阿兰和英国的利文斯通。永恒主义作为一种教育哲学，坚持主张过去的东西是卓越的，为宇宙、人性、知识和真善美的不变的本质辩解，认为凡是值得向往的东西都是永恒不变的。永恒主义者强调，理性是人性的基础。社会秩序的稳定，依赖于以永恒的真善美原则为基础的理性文化。漠视这些理性文化，社会就会因精神支柱的坍塌而立足不稳。他们甚至把20世纪30年代世界范围的经济危机所带来的社会问题，归因于道德问题和文化问题。永恒主义在极力推崇“永恒价值”的基调上，确立了“复古式”课程标准。他们还认为，好的教育在于使人逐渐认识真理而变得富有人性。
