| 边防部队 frontier guards 专门驻守边疆的部队。中国历代王朝都设有戍守边境的部队。中华人民共和国建立后，中国人民解放军边防部队的主要任务是：严守国界，保卫边疆，同一切侵略、挑衅行为作斗争；负责边境值勤、管理，维护边境秩序，保护边疆人民生命财产的安全；处理边境涉外事务，增进中国人民与邻国人民间的友谊；参加边疆社会主义建设，做好群众工作和民兵工作，搞好军民联防等。世界上许多国家在古代都曾派部队守边。现代大多数国家都设有边防部队。有些国家的边防部队自成体系，称边防军；有些国家的边防任务由警卫队或警察部队担任。
