回归对具有相互联系的现象，根据其关系形式，择一合适的数学模型，用来近似地表达变量间平均变动关系的一种统汁分析方法。19世纪英国的高尔登在研究成年孩子的身高与他们父母的身高关系时发现，高个子父母的孩子虽然也比较高，但特别高的父母其孩子的高度低于父母;反之，特别矮的父母虽然孩子也比较矮，但却高于父母。他提出了身高向平均数回归的结论，这是可归一词的由来，以后在理论和实践方面不断完善。 目前的回归分析通常是指一变量y与另一变量二或一组变量二一(二1，二2，x3……二，)之间有一定关系.但义不是确切的函数关系这种关系可表示为模型: y一f(二)十￡式中x称为自变量，y称为因变量，￡是随机误差项.f(劝称为回归函数。通常y是一维的，而x可以是多维的。当二为多维时，称为多元回归模型。回归分析的目的是通过自变量的一定取值来预测y的取值，或为希望达到预定的y值而对x进行控制。
