作为“佛、法、僧”三宝之一的出家人以普渡众生、行菩萨道为己任。菩萨道的主要精神体现在替众生“与乐、拔苦”的慈悲心上。因此，南朝梁·沈约《究竟慈悲论》指出：“释氏之教，义本慈悲。”慈悲是发起一切善行的基础。不过，光有慈悲还不够。度化众生还需要因时、因地、因人而异的权巧之智，称为“方便门”。如唐·窥基《法华经玄赞》卷三解释：“利物有则曰方，随时而济曰便。”据说，佛有八万四千方便法门，度化一切众生。如元·朱凯《昊天塔》第四折中长老说：“俺出家的人，慈悲为本，方便为门。”（李明权）
