经云：佛与众僧在给孤独园，有海龙王变为人形来求出家。诸比丘不知是龙，即度出家。时龙比丘摄心坐禅。龙性多睡，即便睡眠，不能隐形，身满房中。同住比丘，后来入房，见龙大惊。唤众比丘。龙闻唤声，即便觉悟，还为比丘，跏跌坐禅。大众云集，但见比丘，不见龙形。众大惊疑，即往白佛。佛言：此非人也，乃是龙王。遂唤龙比丘来，为其说法，令还龙宫。后不许比丘度龙出家。故佛说此五种因缘也。
［一、生不能隐形］，生不能隐形者，谓龙初生之时，但是本形，不能化为异类之身也。
［二、死不能隐形］，死不能隐形者，谓龙报终之时，必是本形，不能化为异类之身也。
［三、淫不能隐形］，淫不能隐形者，谓龙交遘之时，必是本形，不能化为异类之身也。
［四、嗔不能隐形］，嗔不能隐形者，谓龙嗔怒之时，必是本形，不能化为异类之身也。
［五、睡不能隐形］，睡不能隐形者，谓龙睡眠之时，必是本形，不能化为异类之身也。
