喉部黏膜弥漫性炎症。大多为急性上感的一部分，有时在麻疹、流感、肺炎或其他传染病的病程中并发。常见的病原菌为金黄色葡萄球菌、肺炎链球菌和链球菌等。可有不同程度的发热、声嘶、犬吠样咳嗽和吸气性喉鸣以及喉梗阻的各项症状。按吸气性呼吸困难的轻重将喉梗阻分以下四度：一度：患者安静时如正常人，活动后出现吸气性喉鸣及呼吸困难。胸部听诊呼吸音清晰。心率无改变。二度：在安静时出现喉鸣及吸气性呼吸困难。胸部听诊可闻喉传导音或管状呼吸音。支气管远端呼吸音降低，听不到■音。心率快，120～140次/min。三度：除第二度梗阻症状外，患儿因缺氧而出现阵发性烦躁不安、行为异常、口唇及指趾发绀、口周发青或苍白、出汗。胸部听诊呼吸音明显降低或听不见，也听不到■音。心音较钝，心率在140～160次/min以上。四度：经呼吸困难的挣扎后，渐呈衰竭，半昏睡或昏睡状态，由于无力呼吸，表现暂时安静，三凹征也不明显，面色苍白发灰。此时呼吸音几全消失，仅有气管传导音。心音微弱极钝，心率或快或慢，不规律。使用抗生素及大量肾上腺皮质激素治疗。出现三度梗阻经治疗无效或出现四度梗阻者应立即行气管切开术抢救。
