中国封建社会中一般出身贫苦，从小被出卖，或由家庭包办订婚并在婆家生活的妇女。这是封建婚姻制度的产物。童养媳有两种情况：①男方家有子嗣后，同时抱养或买进别家幼女作为养女，适龄期与本家儿子成婚，养女转为儿媳；②婚后暂无子嗣，先抱养别家女为养女，或买进养女，待生子再将养女转为子媳。从童养阶段开始，幼女便要担负繁重的家务劳动，并常常遭受家长的体罚摧残。中华人民共和国建立后，童养婚俗已被明令禁止。
