大型有蹄类，体长220～280厘米，肩高120厘米以上，体重200多千克。头部长大，颈粗，其耳比驴耳短，蹄宽圆。整体外形象马，但额部无长毛，颈鬃短而直立。夏毛浅棕色，两侧及四肢内侧色淡，腹部乳黄色；冬毛略长而粗，色变浅，两颊有赤褐色长毛。
栖息于缓坡上的山地草原、荒漠及水草条件略好的沙漠、戈壁。野马性机警，善奔驰；一般由强壮的雄马为首领结成5～20只马群，营游移生活。多在晨昏沿固定的路线到泉、溪边饮水。
喜食芨芨草、梭梭、芦苇，冬天能刨开积雪觅食枯草。6月份发情交配，次年4～5月份产仔，每胎1仔，幼驹出生后几小时就能随群奔跑。
野马原分布于我国新疆北部准葛尔盆地北塔山及甘肃、内蒙古交界的马鬃山一带。最后一次发现野马是在1957年，估计野生种群已经灭绝，目前还有一定数量的野马生活在人工圈养或半散放状态下。20世纪80年代末期以来，我国从欧洲引回新疆奇台、甘肃武威半散放养殖，为野马重返大自然而进行科学实验和研究工作。
原产于新疆北部，甘肃、内蒙古交界处。
属于国家一级保护动物。
