1890年12月在匈牙利总工人党基础上改组而成。初期主要活动集中在工会,曾对工人运动起过积极作用。19世纪90年代末期始,逐渐接受第二国际机会主义纲领,鼓吹议会道路。第一次世界大战中，其右翼领导人执行社会沙文主义政策，支持本国政府参加帝国主义战争。战争后期，采取和平主义立场，放弃阶级斗争和阻止反战运动。1918年10月资产阶级民主革命中，这个党同自由资产阶级联盟，共同组阁。1918年11月，以库恩·贝拉为首的左翼社会党人建立了匈牙利共产党。1919年 3月21日社会民主党与匈牙利共产党合并，组成匈牙利社会党，夺取政权，创建匈牙利苏维埃共和国。共和国期间，其右翼首领叛变投降。革命失败后，佩德尔组成工会政府（1919年8月1～6日）,旨在恢复资本主义制度。霍尔蒂·米克洛什法西斯统治时期，以佩耶尔·卡罗伊为首的右翼首领采取妥协政策，参加政府，并于1921年12月与反动当局签订贝特兰-佩耶尔协定,联合反共。1925～1927年，这个党的左派响应匈共的倡议，成立匈牙利社会主义工人党，以合法身份进行活动。第二次世界大战前夕,右派首领分裂和破坏工人队伍,多次拒绝与匈共合作建立统一战线。慕尼黑协定后,追随反动当局,把矛头指向苏联和匈牙利共产党。第二次世界大战爆发时，采取观望态度。但这个党的左派与匈共采取一致行动，于1941年联合发表反纳粹德国的《圣诞节宣言》。1944年希特勒军队占领匈牙利，该党转入地下。左派代表加入由和平党（见匈牙利社会主义工人党）倡议成立的反法西斯组织──匈牙利阵线。1945年全国解放后，社会民主党清除右派,重新改建。1948年6月与匈共合并成立匈牙利劳动人民党。
