相关关系分为直线相关和曲线相关。直线相关可用直线相关系数r表示，r没有单位,其值在-1至+1之间。r为正值时，称正相关；r为负值时，称负相关。r=0时或接近于0时为无相关。r绝对值越大，说明两个变量间的关系越密切，反之亦然。由于r是从样本资料求得,故在应用时还应做r的显著性检验。曲线相关,一般用相关比表示相关程度。
相关关系只说明两个变量在数量上的关系，不表明它们之间有因果关系，但相关关系却为进一步探求因果关系提供重要线索。
