未结合氧的血红蛋白呈暗红色。静脉血中未结合氧的血红蛋白较多，故呈暗红色。当由于窒息、肺炎、肺气肿、心功能不全等疾病使肺部气体交换发生障碍时，血中还原血红蛋白增多。如果血中还原血红蛋白含量达50g/L以上时，则口唇、指甲等处呈现青紫，称为发绀，这是动脉血缺氧的象征。
