   豆科(Leguminosae)黄芪属一年生或越年生草本。又称红花草、翘摇。重要的绿肥、饲料兼用作物。按生育期和成熟期可分早、中、晚3个类型。主根肥大,侧根发达。茎直立或匍匐,羽状复叶,总状花序近伞形,荚果细长而微弯。性喜温暖湿润条件。有一定耐寒能力,全生育期间要求足够的水分,土壤水分低于12%时开始死苗  。对土壤要求不严,以pH5.5~7.5的砂质和粘质壤土较为适宜。耐盐性差,不宜在盐碱地上种植。异花传粉,杂交率较高。由于紫云英养分含量和饲料价值均较高,所以,中国南方用作稻田冬季绿肥栽种。
