Krause(1898年)首次应用听神经切断术治疗耳鸣，1908年又应用此手术治疗眩晕，Dandy(1924年)用此法治疗耳性眩晕(又称“Meniere病”)。Mckenzie(1931年)提出只需切断前庭神经来治疗耳性眩晕。一般认为前庭神经切断术适用于长期反复发作、症状严重、内科治疗无效的耳性眩晕症。
