专供目视寻星用的折射望远镜，附加在主望远镜镜筒上，用来搜寻待观测天体。它的作用是将待观测天体引导到主望远镜视场中央。寻星镜一般采用双分离或双胶合物镜，口径5～10厘米,焦平面处置有供瞄准用的分划板。视场一般为3°左右，常用大视场角的目镜,其放大率约10～20倍。
