在相对短的地史时期内  ,因海面下降或陆地上升,造成海水从大陆向海洋逐渐退缩的地质现象。海退的结果,常形成地层的海退序列,由下至上一般为:沉积物由细变粗或由碳酸盐岩变为碎屑岩;沉积时的海水由深变浅;海相沉积逐渐演变成海陆交互相沉积和陆相沉积。海侵和海退常紧密伴生,海退也具有周期性和旋回性,在时间和空间上也可区别为不同级别和规模。海退的成因可与海侵类比(见海面升降运动,海侵)。
