胰腺的内分泌部分，是分散在胰腺中的不规则的细胞群。胰岛至少有三种细胞：A(或α2）细胞分泌胰高血糖素；B(或β）细胞分泌胰岛素；近来又发现一种细胞，称为D(或δ或α1）细胞，它在正常情况下分泌生长激素释放抑制激素。D细胞增生或发生肿瘤时，分泌大量胃泌素，称为胃泌素瘤。可引起胃酸分泌过多的消化性溃疡。胰岛这些细胞紧靠在毛细血管上，所分泌的激素，通过毛细血管壁渗入血液内，有调节糖代谢的作用。
