| 卫星通信 satellite communications 利用通信卫星作为中继站实现地球上各点之间的通信。主要进行电视、电话、电报、传真和数据传输等通信内容。各卫星通信地球站向通信卫星传输上行线路信号，经通信卫星接收并向各个卫星通信地球站转发下行线路信号，从而实现了各地球站之间的通信。20世纪60年代末以前，大容量远距离通信主要靠电缆、微波中继接力站等来实现，耗费资金较大，而且只能在所设计的线路和分布点上实现通信，难以在边远地区和人烟稀少地区实现全区域通信。卫星通信是60年代中期航天技术与通信技术结合而产生的新的通信手段。1962 年利用电星1号卫星进行了首次横跨大西洋的通信。1963年美国与日本之间通过中继 1号卫星作了第一次跨越太平洋的电视转播。1964年静止轨道通信卫星辛康3 号成功地转播了东京夏季奥林匹克运动会的实况。70年代，卫星通信迅速发展，以解决远距离、大容量通信为主，并向区域性通信和移动通信方向发展。中国1972 年开始应用卫星通信，1984年开始使用中国自己发射的通信卫星进行卫星通信。
