引起白喉的病原菌，属棒状杆菌，革兰染色阳性，菌体细长，微弯，排列不规则，常呈L、V或Y形。亚甲蓝染色，可见染色较深的细小颗粒，呈联珠状；奈瑟等染色可示两端极体与异染颗粒是本菌特征。无动力，不产芽胞、不耐热，60℃很快死亡，耐冷冻及干燥，在水、奶或干燥黏液中能生存数日到数周，一般化学消毒剂均可迅速杀灭。
