| 极光 aurora 出现于高磁纬地区上空绚丽多彩的发光现象 。由来自地球磁层或太阳的高能带电粒子流使高层大气分子或 原子激发(或电离)而产生。由于地磁场的作用，这些高能粒子转向极区，故极光常见于高磁纬地区。在北半球观察到的极光称北极光，南半球观察到的极光称南极光。极光发生于70～1000 千米的高度范围，在背阳侧极光主要发生在 100～150千米的高空 ；在向阳侧主要发生在 200～450 千 米的高空。极光景色壮观，绚丽多姿，形态多样，如均匀光弧、射线式光柱 、射线式光弧光带、帘幕状极光、极光冕等。极光按观测的电磁波波段分为光学极光和无线电极光；按激发粒子类型可分为电子极光和质子极光；按发生区域可分为极光带极光、极盖极光和中纬极光红弧。
