中国古代用人力驱动运转的明轮船，也称轮船或车轮舸。早在南北朝(420～589)时，已有车船的记载。唐代李皋对车船的发展起了承前启后的作用。他制造的车船用人力踏动快速前进。宋代的车船盛极一时，绍兴二年(1132)王彦恢制的战舰，旁设4轮，每轮8楫（桨片）。木匠高宣也是造车船的名匠,曾创造大小车船10余种,大型车船长20～30丈，吃水1丈左右，可容纳 700～800人；中型车船一般承载 200～300人。车船有2车、4车、5车、8车、9车以及 23、24车等多种。宋朝最大车船长 36丈，宽 4丈 1尺。明初陈友谅也曾使用车船在鄱阳湖进行水战。明中叶以后，卢崇俊作多种型式的车船称为"静江龙船"。直到20世纪初，中国南方还有少量车船。车船虽然未能在各水系普遍使用，但它的历史悠久，对中国船舶的发展起过很大的作用。
