中国电影导演、摄影师、演员。1950年11月生于陕西西安。中学毕业后在陕西农村插队，后当工人。1978年考入北京电影学院摄影系；1982年 7月毕业后分配到广西电影制片厂任摄影；担任影片《黄土地》(1984)和《大阅兵》（1986）摄影师。由于《黄土地》（见彩图)的摄影构思独特，有个性，有突破,1985年在法国第7届三大洲电影节获摄影奖。1986年借调到西安电影制片厂任导演。1987年主演影片《老井》（见彩图），表演质朴、准确,在日本第2届东京国际电影节获最佳男演员奖。他导演的影片《红高粱》 (见彩图)在1988年举行的第38届西柏林国际电影节获金熊奖（大奖）。1988年他还因《老井》获得第8届电影金鸡奖和第11届电影百花奖最佳男演员奖。
