戏曲表演艺术专著。盖叫天口述，何慢、龚义江记录整理。1956年陆续在《戏剧报》发表。1958年出版。1980年再版时，增收60年代发表的包括谈武松戏表演经验的文章。全书介绍著名京剧表演艺术家盖叫天学戏、演戏的心得体会和对戏曲表演艺术的独到见解。内容分4部分：①艺术生活。叙述贫苦的家世,曲折的学艺经历。对练功、学戏以及前辈艺人的轶事皆有生动的忆述，是研究近代京剧史和河北梆子史的珍贵资料。②散论。论述表演身段与生活、艺术美的关系；探讨从子午相等身段中体现出来的戏曲形式美的某些特征。③武松的表演经验。介绍《打虎》、《狮子楼》等 7出武松戏的表演经验。强调从特定环境与人物之间的关系出发，表现人物的心境，并通过精心设计的身段，塑造具有独特风格的英雄形象。④表演艺术纵横谈。讲述创造人物形象过程中如何体现真实感；探讨人物内心活动与形体动作的统一过程，以达到"化无形为有形"的艺术境界。对练功、学艺提出"笨鸟先飞"、"灵魂复习"、"默而后悟,悟而后化"的见解；对舞台表演提出"真中有假,假中有真，真真假假，真假难分"的看法。书中所谈经验，深入浅出，言简意赅，为提高演员艺术修养和研究戏曲表演艺术，提供了宝贵材料。前有田汉的代序，增订版书前增加刘厚生的代序和欧阳予倩的文章，对著述者的为人为艺，做了全面中肯的评价。增订版书末附有《盖叫天舞台生活主要活动年表》和整理者文章。
