汉剧演员，工末。字丹圃，湖北咸宁人。青年时喜爱汉剧，后拜胡双喜为师，兼取任天全等名家之长，融会贯通，独树一帜。光绪末年，名驰荆州沙市一带，后至汉口演唱，享40年盛誉不衰。民国初年，京剧、汉剧一度合班，与汪笑侬同台演出，相得益彰。余洪元能戏颇多,尤长袍带戏,如《兴汉图》的刘备，《乔府求计》的乔玄，《六部审》的闵爵等。他演《盗宗卷》中张苍的憨直，《四进士》中宋士杰的老谋善断，曾受到余叔岩、周信芳的赞赏,其嗓音宽洪圆亮，运腔醇冽多姿,天赋独厚,艺风朴质。特别是以腔带情,感人尤深。如《李陵碑》射雁之后，唱"宝雕弓打不着空中飞鸟，弓折弦断所为那条"时，用"煞头"收住，音断弦止，悲壮苍凉，凄惶欲绝，观众无不悚然动容。他传神的表演，还表现在内心体验上，如演《状元谱》的陈伯愚，在打走陈大官后再上场时，一面与安人问答,一面扫视左右,寻找陈大官。余恨未消中又流露出爱侄心切之情。1923年曾组班到北京演出，在《群英会》中扮诸葛亮，深受观众欢迎。
