中国民间体育活动之一，也是武术的辅助练习，它包括举鼎、举石担、举石锁、举大刀、举石臼等。
中国民间举重历史悠久。《资治通鉴》卷 3载："秦武王好以力戏，力士任鄙、乌获、孟说皆至大官。八月，王与孟说举鼎，绝脉而薨。"这说明早在两千多年前的战国时期，举重练习就有所开展。《晋书·成帝本纪》载："咸和八年令诸郡举力人能举千五百斤以上者"，可见举重之盛行。唐朝武举除步射马枪外，对举重也有规定，如负重行走二十步等。到了清朝，武考则以举石为主要考试项目之一。
民间举重的发展是同武术的发展分不开的。所有的举重器械经逐步改进发展成为不同重量的石担，石锁等，举的方式方法也变得多种多样。例如，石担，不仅可以举，而且还可以舞；举的方法有单（双）手抓举、挺举、推举；舞的方法有扯旗、 腰花、背箭、 头花和颈花等。又如石锁，有单手抓举、 推举、砸肘、 背箭等；大刀，有冲举、劈举、扯旗、腰花等。
在1953年举行的全国民族形式体育表演竞赛大会上，将举石担列为举重竞赛项目。现在在中国广大农村和城镇都有不少地方设有石担、石锁等供爱好举重者练习。
