在最优控制系统的设计中，由于采用了简化方法而使性能指标未达到最优值的控制系统。对于大系统，由于具有维数高、非线性、递阶和分散结构以及时滞等复杂性，若采用精确的最优控制，则会带来过大的计算量，甚至不可能实现。因此需要采用模型降价、结构分解、线性近似或参数灵敏度展开等简化方法。这些简化的代价就使性能指标产生一定程度的退化。对于随机系统、分布参数系统、非线性系统等也常常需要采用次优控制设计。见大系统理论、随机控制理论、最优控制系统、非线性系统理论。
