小区域内由于人口稠密、习俗不同所形成的单独遗传的人群。这一概念由S.M.加恩于1961年提出。小人种是最低一级人种分类单位，它不是地理隔离的产物，而是由于社会习俗的不同和人口的稠密，本地出生的人不需远离本土婚配，造成长期的内部婚配，历经几个世纪的遗传所形成的人群。小人种的分化在小城镇间比在大城市之间更为明显，因为大城市的居民流动性较大。
