山西省运城地区辖县，山西重要棉麦产地之一。位于省境西南部。邻接陕西省。面积1196平方公里，人口35.4万。县府驻城关镇。永济古为虞舜都，秦为蒲反县，东汉改名蒲坂县。隋为河东县，清置永济县，属蒲州府，故治在今县西南蒲州老城。境内中条山屏列于南，黄河奔流于西，控山带河，形势险要。涑水河由临猗县北来，经五姓湖西流入黄河。全县棉麦播种面积约占耕地的3/4，其余为玉米、豆类、水稻、黄麻、花生、蔬菜等。电力、纺织、农药等工业具一定规模。同蒲铁路横贯县境中部，此外有公路通往运城、芮城、临猗等邻县。舜都蒲坂故址在蒲州老城东南隅。蒲州老城附近的普救寺建于唐，毁于1555年地震，《西厢记》故事即发生于此。后修鸳鸯塔，塔高13层，列为保护文物。西文学村位于老城北，是唐代大文学家柳宗元故里，村内有柳家巷，至今柳姓甚众。
