英国音乐评论家。原名威廉·罗伯茨。1868年11月30日生于埃弗顿,1959年7月7日卒于萨里。在利物浦大学受教育,后为利物浦的银行职员,业余学习音乐。1889年起开始为报刊杂志撰写各种评论文章。1895年出版《格鲁克与歌剧》，1899年出版《瓦格纳的研究》，引起公众注意。1903年被伯明翰的米德兰学院聘为讲师，教音乐理论，从此以音乐为职业。1905年转入新闻界，在曼彻斯特的《卫报》任评论员；先后经常为《伯明翰每日邮报》、伦敦星期日报《观察家》、伦敦《星期日泰晤士报》撰写音乐评论，并一度任《纽约晚报》特约评论员。90岁时还定期为《星期日泰晤士报》写专栏文章。他是英国最有影响的音乐评论家之一。他的兴趣广泛，文笔生动，兼有技术分析和历史评论，很受西方读者欢迎。除大量评论文章外，还有专著《埃尔加》（1906）、《胡戈·沃尔夫》(1907)、《理查·施特劳斯》(1908)、《伟大歌剧故事集》（共3卷）等。特别是《理查·瓦格纳的生平》4卷集(1933～1947),是众多的瓦格纳传记中最成功的著作之一。
