斯里兰卡作家。出生在南方省科格拉地区一个小康人家，曾当过店员。他刻苦自学僧伽罗语、英语、梵语和巴利语。曾任《太阳报》、《兰卡宝石报》和《王冠宝石报》主编。1946年后专事写作。他一生创作了80多部作品。长篇小说《乡村的变迁》(1944)是他的代表作，真实地反映了斯里兰卡社会在资本主义的冲击下所发生的深刻变化，已被译成俄文、泰米尔文，1965年改编成电影。长篇小说《禁欲》(1956)发表后得到好评。长篇小说《神秘岛》（1947）有中译本，曾译为《蛇岛的秘密》。中国还选译了他的短篇小说，以《魏克拉玛辛诃短篇小说集》的书名出版。晚年写的长篇小说《轮回的解脱》，根据历史事实把释迦牟尼塑造成一个超人的形象，而没有予以神化，因而遭到一些佛教徒的非议。
他的主要作品还有：长篇小说《海市蜃楼》(1925)、《时代的终结》(1949)、《罪恶时代》（1957），自传《出生以来》(1961)，短篇小说集《奴隶》，游记《苏联的崛起》(1962)等。
