菲尔坎特早年致力于文化变迁研究，在《文化变迁的延续性》中提出了"延续法则"，认为每一种变迁都经历了长期的准备，都依赖于历史的积累，在旧的基础上发展起来。后来，他接受了G.齐美尔的形式社会学思想，认为社会学的对象是社会生活的最终形式、社会力量和社会事实。其后又接受了现象学的方法，自称其体系是现象学感召下的社会心理学，即研究人类精神生活的历史特点的心理学。
