中华人民共和国建立初期中央人民政府主管新闻机构的部门。成立于1949年11月 1日。受政务院文化教育委员会领导。任务是领导全国新闻事业，管理国家的新闻机构。下属单位有新华通讯社、中央广播事业局、国际新闻局、新闻摄影局、北京新闻学校等。新闻总署成立后，曾进行下列工作：与邮电部联合公布《关于邮电局发行报纸暂行办法》(1950年 2月)；公布《关于建立广播收音网的决定》(1950年 4月14日)；通过《关于统一新华通讯社组织和工作的决定》 (1950年 4月25日)；与出版总署共同拟订《关于各级新闻出版机关的任务与组织暂行规定 (草案)》(1950年5月30日)。曾于1949年12月召开全国报纸经理会议，1950年3月29日至4月16日召开全国新闻工作会议。 署长胡乔木， 副署长范长江、萨空了。1952 年 2月 12日经政务院决定撤销新闻总署。撤销后，新华通讯社改由政务院文化教育委员会直接领导，国际新闻局改为外文出版社。
