汉语辅音发音时候声带不颤动的叫清，颤动的叫浊。这两个术语是从古音乐术语借来的。《礼记·乐记》"倡和清浊",《正义》说:"长者浊也......短者清也。"这是说管乐器长的音低，短的音高。辅音里声带颤动经常是低频的，所以借用浊来表示。早期等韵家把"见溪群疑"叫"清,次(第二个)清,浊，清浊"。后来等韵家有把"疑"等鼻音叫"次浊"的,也有在"清"、"浊"上加"全"字的（陈澧等人又借用"清"、"浊"来表示"阴阳"调）。另外,《韵镜》把鼻辅音也叫"清浊"。原意大约是指口腔无音，鼻腔出音。这种用法忽略了清跟浊的分别在于声带的状况。
