| 上新世（距今约530万年～距今约164万年） Pliocene Epoch 第三纪的第五个世。上新世时形成的地层称上新统，位于中新统之上、第四系之下。上新世是英国C.莱伊尔于1833年命名的。软体动物现生种的含量为49％。晚中新世至早上新世，为三趾马动物群时期，三趾马从北美迁入，草原型动物大量出现；晚上新世，真象从非洲，真马从北美迁入欧亚大陆形成另一动物群，并逐渐演化成现今的动物群。晚第三纪初北欧还有热带常绿植物，西伯利亚还有温带阔叶林，至上新世末喜暖植物明显南退。对于上新世上、下限的确定见晚第三纪。 |
