| 星期日学校 Sunday-school 英、美诸国在星期日为贫民开办的初等教育机构。又称主日学校。兴起于18世纪末，盛行于19世纪上半期。第一所星期日学校1780年由英国出版商R.雷克斯创办于格洛斯特工业区。主要教授圣经、拼音、识字。起初使用粗暴的方法进行教育，收效甚微，后来聘请稍有文化教养的妇女，用文化学习和教义问答等方法来引导和启发学生，因而获得成功。1783年，雷克斯在其出版的刊物《格洛斯特纪事》中介绍此种学校后，引起社会的广泛兴趣。1784年伦敦开办数所星期日学校。19世纪中期，英国此类学校的学生达250万人。进星期日学校学习者主要是儿童，也有青年人和成年人，多数为宗教信徒。教学内容除宗教教义和道德准则外，也包括读、写、算的基本知识。有的星期日学校还为能入学的人整周开放。1870年英国《初等教育法》颁布后，星期日学校为公立学校所取代。德国柏林于1788年建立星期日学校。美国的星期日学校运动始于1786年，南卡罗来纳的查理斯顿市于1787年建立星期日学校，旨在教育非洲儿童，后逐渐发展到匹兹堡、罗德艾兰、波士顿、纽约、新泽西、费城等地。美国的星期日学校局限于纯宗教教育，公立学校运动兴起后日渐衰落。 |
