| 举重 weightlifting 以发展力量为目的举起重物的运动 。 古希腊人通过举石头来锻炼和测验人的体力。罗马人在棍的两头扎上石块来锻炼臂力。在古代雅典的运动场上有一个铁球，只有举得起铁球的人，才有权利参加比赛。19世纪80年代初期，先在英国而后在美国 ， 人们开始致力于组织国际性的举重竞赛。1896年在希腊举行的第一届奥运会上，举重成为正式比赛项目。当时比赛不分体重级别，比赛方式也只限于单手或双手任意举起 。1898 年举行了第一届世界举重锦标赛。1920 年，国际举重联合会在巴黎正式成立，总部设在匈牙利的布达佩斯。1973年在第二十七届世界举重锦标赛上，取消了推举比赛，使竞赛动作只有双手抓举和双手挺举两个速度力量性动作 。1973年把运动员的体重级别分为10级。1993年体重级别又重新调整，虽然还是10级，但重量有了变化，男子最轻是54公斤级，最重是108公斤以上级 。女子最轻是 46 公斤级，最重是83公斤以上级（女子是9级）。美国于 1984年组织了第七届女子举重通讯赛，有12个国家参加。1985 年8月国际举联正式决定 ，把女子举重列为国际比赛项目。1987年10月在美国举行了第一届世界女子举重锦标赛，有22个国家和地区的99名运动员参加。 中国举重运动有悠久的历史。汉代以前是举鼎，晋唐时期为举翘关，明清时期为举石头。1948 年5月在上海举行的第七届全国运动会上，举重列为正式比赛项目。中华人民共和国建立后，1953年举重列为正式比赛。1956 年6月举重运动员陈镜开成为中国体育史上第一个世界纪录创造者。1956～1966年中国有10名运动员先后31次打破5个级别的 11项世界纪录。1984年第二十三届奥运会上，中国有 4 名举重运动员分别获得4个级别的金牌。从 1985 年起，中国开展了女子举重运动，多名女运动员多次获得女子世界冠军。
