| 硅藻土 diatomite 以蛋白石为主要矿物组分的硅质生物沉积岩。主要由硅藻的遗骸组成。硅藻在生长繁衍的过程中，吸取水中胶态的二氧化硅，形成由蛋白石构成的硅藻壳，而硅藻土即由80％～90％甚至90％以上的硅藻壳组成。此外，含有少量的粘土矿物、铁的氧化物和炭有机质等。硅藻土的外形为块状或页岩状，颜色有白色、灰绿色、暗绿色及蓝灰色等，硅藻含量愈大，杂质愈少，则颜色愈白，质愈轻，其比重一般为0.4～0.9。由于硅藻体具有很多的壳体孔洞，使硅藻土具多孔质构造，孔隙度达90％～92％，吸水性强。硅藻颗粒细小约为0.001～0.5毫米，使硅藻土细腻、润滑。硅藻土不溶于HCl、H2SO4和HNO3，但溶于HF和KOH。由于硅藻土具有很多独特的物化性能，因而在工业上用途较广，它是理想的过滤介质，化工催化剂载体，优质隔热保温材料，陶瓷原料，建筑材料以及塑料、橡胶、油漆、制皂、制药等工业的优质填料。
