林中草，原名吴芝麟，浙江海宁人。中共党员。1986年毕业于上海教育学院中文系。1968年参加工作，历任上海第六电表厂工人，上海《解放日报》文艺部副刊编辑，《解放日报》朝花副刊主编，《解放日报》文艺部主任、编委，人民日报社华东分社副总编，《文汇报》副总编辑，高级编辑。1972年开始发表作品。
