| 牛轭湖 oxbow lake 弯曲河段被洪水截弯取直后，被废弃的弯曲河道形成状似牛轭的湖泊。其垂直剖面的底部物质为河床相沙砾石沉积，上部为粉砂粘土质的河漫滩相沉积，顶部为湖相粘土或含有机质的黑色湖沼沉积。这种现象多出现在流经平原地区的河段上，因河水流速很小，容易形成弯曲河道。当弯曲河的弯曲度增大，河床的上、下游段相互接近，形成狭窄的曲流颈，水流的长期作用，曲流颈部形成细小沟痕，在遇到较大洪水时，曲流颈被冲开，河道取直。这时的新河道比降较大，水流流速大，侵蚀强，而原弯曲河道则相反，堆积旺盛以致完全断流而形成湖泊。中国湖北省境内的荆江两岸，牛轭湖众多，就是因为这个地区的地势低平，水流缓慢所致。
