| 星际航行 interplanetary and intersteller navigation 行星际航行和恒星际航行的统称。行星际航行是指太阳系内的航行，恒星际航行是指太阳系以外的恒星际空间的飞行。不载人行星际航行已经实现，而恒星际航行尚处于探索阶段。已知太阳系最外层行星（冥王星）的轨道半径为60亿千米，而离地球最近的恒星（半人旅行者号探测器马座比邻星）与地球相距4.22光年，约合40万亿千米，其他恒星和星系的距离则更远。人们现在能观测到的宇宙范围约为100亿光年，用现在火箭技术所能达到的速度（20千米／秒）可以飞出太阳系，但不能实现恒星际航行。因为以这个速度航行到最近的恒星比邻星约需65000年。航天器只有达到接近光速的速度，恒星际航行才有实际意义。要使航天器接近光速，必须把火箭的喷气速度提高到接近光速。
