生境：江河、湖泊、水库、海湾。
食物：鱼、虾、昆虫、水生植物、人类丢弃的食物残渣。
体型：体型大小似鸽，全长38厘米。体重250～300克。
习性：在东北、新疆为夏侯鸟，其它地区系冬侯鸟。结群活动，在空中或水上飞翔觅食。活动时常发出喧闹单调的“哈、哈、哈”叫声。红嘴鸥越冬期间体羽以白色为主，眼后有黑斑，两翅和背部灰色。嘴红脚红。繁殖期成鸟头部变为咖啡色，有白色眼圈。亚成鸟翅膀覆羽褐色，尾巴端部有黑斑。
红嘴鸥是中国南部地区冬季最常见的鸥类。在昆明、青岛等城市，红嘴鸥常进入城区的公园水体和河流地段觅食，受到人们的保护和投食招引。昆明自1985年秋季以来，每年冬天都有上万只红嘴鸥在市区内的翠湖公园，盘龙江等地觅食活动，形成昆明的特色风景。
