为豆科植物戎芦巴Trigonella foenum-graecum L.的种子。
【植物形态】
一年生草本，高20～80cm，全株有香气。茎直立，多丛生，被疏毛。三出复叶互生；小叶长卵形或卵状披针形，长1～3.5cm，宽0.5～1.5cm，两边均生疏柔毛；叶柄长，托叶与叶柄连合。花无梗，1～2朵腋生；花萼筒状；花冠蝶形，白色，后渐变淡黄色，基部微带紫色；雄蕊10，二体；子房线形，荚果细长，扁圆筒状，略弯曲，长6～11cm，宽0.5cm，具网脉及柔毛，先端有长喙。种子10～20粒，棕色，有香气。花期4～6月，果期7～8月。 多栽培。主产安徽、四川、河南。
【采制】
果实成熟时割取全草，打下种子，晒干。生用或微炒用。
【性状】
种子略呈斜方形，长3～5mm，宽2～3mm，厚约2mm。表面黄棕色或红棕色，微有灰色短毛，两侧各有一深斜沟，两沟相接处为种脐。质坚硬。气香，味微苦。
【化学成分】
含葫芦巴碱（trigonellinelline）、薯蓣皂甙元葡萄糖甙（diosgenin-B-D-blucoside）、牡荆素（vitexin）、异牡荆素（saponaretin）、异荭草素（isoorientin）、牡荆素-7-葡萄糖甙（vitexin-7-glucoside）、葫芦巴甙Ⅰ、∏（vicenin Ⅰ, ∏）。
【性味】
性温，味苦。
【功能主治】
温肾，祛寒，止痛。用于肾脏虚冷、小腹冷痛、小肠疝气、寒湿脚气。
