甲醛的线型聚合物,分子式 。为无色固体,n的范围在8~100之间。多聚甲醛在加热时分解成气态的甲醛,在酸的催化下可水解成甲醛溶液。这样得到的甲醛溶液不含商品甲醛溶液中的甲醇,其性质与无醇甲醛溶液一样。多聚甲醛是生产甲醛溶液时形成的固体产物,也可用甲醛水溶液在碳酸胍、季铵碱等催化下生产。多聚甲醛和甲醛溶液(福尔马林)都是甲醛的一种重要商品形式。多聚甲醛可做酚醛树脂、脲醛树脂的原料,也可做杀菌剂和杀霉菌剂。
