各种特异性感觉传导纤维上行通过脑干时，发出侧支与脑干网状结构的神经元发生突触联系。在网状结构内多次换神经元上行，到达丘脑的中线核群，最后经过丘脑的网状核，弥散地投到大脑皮质的广泛区域。这一感觉投射途径称非特异性投射系统。经非特异性投射系统到达皮层的感觉信息，不引起特异感觉，但对维持醒觉状态有重要作用。催眠药的作用机理，就是抑制了脑干网状结构和非特异性投射系统的传导。
